New York Yankees have enjoyed more success than any other MLB franchise. As someone once said: "Rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for U.S. Steel." Yankees has won 26 World Series Baseball titles, and featured some of the greatest players of all-time: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Reggie Jackson, Dave Winfield, Rickey Henderson, Derek Jeter, Roger Clemens, and Alex Rodriguez. Yankee managers are legends as well: Miller Huggins, Bucky Harris, Joe McCarthy, Casey Stengel, Billy Martin, and Joe Torre.
It took the New York Yankees two decades to get to their first World Series. Five other AL MLB teams had won a title before the New Yorkers garnered an AL crown. The roots of the franchise in fact belong in Baltimore, where John McGraw piloted the Orioles in 1901 and 1902 before his feud with the American League. In 1903, AL officials determined to compete with the established National League in New York, establishing a franchise in the city. The team was recognized as the Highlanders, in part because of the region of New York they played in.
The best player on those Highlander teams was "Wee Willie" Keeler, who was finishing up his Hall of Fame career. Right-hander Jack Chesbro, another Hall of Fame member, starred on the mound, winning 41 games in 1904. Later standouts were Birdie Cree, Hal Chase, Roger Peckinpaugh, and Wally Pipp. These are the forgotten names in New York Yankees history because of the dynasty that started in the 1920s.

Yankees Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
The season is ending at the hands of their most hated rivals in the stadium Yankees fans have loved because of its once invincible feel.
But that feeling disappeared years ago, especially when the Red Sox started their path toward breaking their almost century-long drought on the Yankees' supposedly hallowed ground back in 2004.
The loss Wednesday night was not nearly as painful for the Yankees, who have surely been numbed by now to the increasing reality that their season will end without a playoff berth.
Boston beat up Sidney Ponson early and the Yankees' reeling bullpen late for an 11-3 win.
That put the Yankees seven games back in the wild-card chase with 30 games left.
Which realistically leaves them watching the playoffs at home for the...
